The Gears of War Movie Is Still (Probably) Happening

Gears of War 4

I don’t want to sound cynical here, but a Gears of War movie is just about the worst idea I have ever heard. Unless it’s super low-budget, features Dolph Lundgren and maybe a random cameo from someone at WWE, it’s going to be yet another video game big screen adaptation failure that will lose the studio a lot of money.

But Hollywood doesn’t see it like that, and if there’s anything we know about Hollywood, it’s that they’re stubborn as all hell. They spent years trying to get an Assassin’s Creed movie out in the wild, even when everyone knew it wouldn’t translate all that well to film.

Gears of War has been a part of that same mill of up-in-the-air video game adaptations for a year now. There’s been barely any movement on it since it was announced by The Coalition in conjunction with Universal, but it’s just moved one step closer to becoming a reality: it has a screenwriter aboard.

Shane Salerno, who is a screenwriter for the next four Avatar movies that aren’t out yet or anywhere near done, will be tasked with the impossibility of turning Gears of War into the golden goose of video game adaptations. Ted Scott and Dylan Clark will produce.

I really wouldn’t get all that excited just yet – I’ve lost track of the amount of names attached to projects like these that have just quietly been rubbed off the slate over time. Plus, Gears of War isn’t at its most prominent right now and may have the same issue that befell the Warcraft movie: coming too late.

Still, if it happens and we get a genuinely fun, brainless testosterbrone movie with some kind of heart, I will as happy as anyone.
