Death Stranding
Death Stranding

Geoff Keighley hosted the first ever Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2019, where a variety of World Premiere announcements were made, along with more details on already announced games and tonnes more. If you missed it and don’t have a couple of hours to spare to catch up on all the relevant details, here’s a round-up of all the details you need to know from Opening Night Live. Check it out below.

Gears 5’s Story Asks An Important Question

After already getting the lion’s share of coverage during today’s Inside Xbox stream, Gears 5 kicked off Opening Night Live with a new trailer for the game’s campaign. The story will see Kait set out to discover her heritage, posing the question that “when the blood on your hands runs through your veins, who will you die for?” Gears 5 could be the darkest entry in the series yet, and we’re excited to see more when it launches on September 10th, or September 6th for Ultimate Edition owners and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.

Comanche Announced, Coming In 202o

Comanche, a reboot of the helicopter simulation series that’s been dormant since 2001, will be making a return in 2020 thanks to THQ Nordic, boasting multiplayer helicopter combat and close-range drone gameplay. Comanche will release in beta in 2020, with sign-ups now available for the game’s alpha. No word on a console release, but it will launch on Steam, so there’s that.

Need For Speed: Heat Gets Gameplay Trailer

Need For Speed: Heat marks the series’ return to street racing, with a new gameplay trailer detailing the intricacies of the underground street racing. There’s sanctioned races during the day, but the night offers more rewards and the chance to earn more rep, at the risk of getting caught by the cops and losing everything. It looks like a return to form for the series, but we’ll have to hope it can reach pole position when it launches in November.

Kerbal Space Program 2 Announced

Get ready to launch some more Kerbals into space, and by space we mean about 2km into the sky before they come crashing back down to Earth, as Kerbal Space Program 2 is launching in 2020 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. From the trailer, it looks like the Kerbals will be going further than ever before, establishing bases on planets across the galaxy. Just remember, one errant launch or landing can lead to some huge destruction.

Little Nightmares 2 Coming In 2020

How can a sequel be darker yet cuter at the same time? Somehow, Little Nightmares 2 manages it. The sequel will add a new playable character in the form of Mono, along with the ability to re-purpose items like kitchen utensils to tackle enemies, though developers Tarsier Studios haven’t confirmed if combat will form a huge part of the game’s DNA. Either way, it’s coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch in 2020.

Predator: Hunting Grounds Gets First Gameplay Trailer

Developed by Illfonic, Predator: Hunting Grounds is a 4v1 multiplayer shooter, with four marines dropping into an active warzone against a insurgent force, similar to the original Predator film from 1987. However, stalking them at all times is the Predator, who is armed to the teeth with sci-fi weaponry. 4 marines vs 1 Predator? Should have brought more marines.

The Cycle’s Alpha Is Available Right Now

Yager, who created Spec Ops: The Line, are doing things a little bit differently with The Cycle, which they’re describing as a new genre blend of PvE and PvP. A new genre? What about Warzone Multiplayer in Halo 5? Regardless, you can download the alpha for free on the Epic Games Store, which will go down well, I’m sure.

Humankind Announced By SEGA And Amplitude

SEGA and Amplitude Studios have revealed a new 4X strategy game called Humankind, where players create their own civilisation through blending the identities of over 60 different cultures from the Neolithic to the Modern Age, with the pursuit of Fame being the ultimate winning condition. Guess there won’t be any nuclear victories here. Maybe.

Everspace 2 Revealed, Coming In 2021

Developers Rockfish Games were teasing some kind of announcement during Gamescom 2019, and it turns out that announcement was Everspace 2, which will be launching on PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2021. The sequel will offer the same fast paced gameplay that the first game was known for, but in a persistent open world with a story set after the first game.

Switcher 3 Release Date, People

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition on the Nintendo Switch has a release date, finally, with players able to experience the journey of Geralt both at home and on the go from October 15th. The announcement comes with a new trailer that shows what the game looks like on the Switch, and while it’s an obvious downgrade, it’s still quite impressive that CD Projekt Red have managed to condense the entire game onto the Switch.

Disintegration Gets Debut Gameplay Trailer

Disintegration, the game from one of Halo’s co-creators, has received its first gameplay trailer. Players will pilot a Gravcycle in this new sci-fi FPS that boasts a single player campaign and a full PvP mode. Disintegration will be launching in 2020 on PS4, Xbox One and PC, and we’re excited to see more of this game.

Erica Is Available On PS4 Right Now

What self-respecting gaming conference would be without some kind of shadow drop? Today sees the announcement of Erica, the long-absent live-action thriller that sees players interacting with the world and story of Erica using their phones, though you can use a controller too if you like. We played a bit of Erica back in 2017, though it would seem in the two years since that the game has found new actors. Either way, it’s available now for less than a tenner in all regions.

Port Royale 4 Coming In 2020

Look, it’s a game with Royale in it that doesn’t have the word “Battle” in front of it, which is absolutely shocking. Either way, Port Royale 4 is the latest instalment of the business management simulation, and it’ll be coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC and the Nintendo Switch in 2020. Now can someone get us a barrel of Rum?

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Getting PS4 Exclusive Alpha This Weekend

Anyone looking forward to playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (and has access to a PS4, crucially), won’t have to wait until the launch in October, as there will be an alpha this weekend to test out the 2v2 mode Gunfight. The alpha starts on the 23rd, so make sure you have a friend ready to play with when the alpha goes live.

Death Stranding Gets The Headline Billing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO-z1sjY42s

After a weird love letter from Geoff Keighley to Hideo Kojima, Mr. Kojima himself took to the stage to talk about Death Stranding, giving more details on characters. And when we say details, we mean they’re talking about a character having a baby “on the other side” and they’re connected by an umbilical cord like that’s meant to be normal. Once again, the answers we’re given raise more questions.

There’s also Guillermo Del Toro talking about how we know nothing about babies. Death Stranding is ruining my head, I don’t know what’s going on anymore. At the very least, there’s a brief snippet of gameplay, with the promise of more to come at Tokyo Game Show in September. Said gameplay included main character Sam sleeping on some grass, waking up and pissing, which got a “woo” from the live crowd.

The gameplay also included a cameo from your boy Geoff Keighley, Sam delivering items that apparently will earn “likes”, and a minigame where Sam has to rock the baby he carries to stop it from crying. Literally more questions than answers. I’m so confused, answers on what the hell Death Stranding is in the comments below.

That’s all the big news from Opening Night Live, and that’s not including a new Monster Hunter World: Iceborne trailer, Destiny 2’s Season of the Undying which kicks off on October 1st, new gameplay for Stadia exclusive GYLT and Life Is Strange 2 Episode 4 launching this week. What was your favourite announcement? Sound off in the comments.
