Friday Box Office: Emoji Movie Takes #1, Atomic Blonde Healthy

Two new wide releases entered the competitive box office fray– Sony’s The Emoji Movie and Focus’ Atomic Blonde – and both held their own.

At number one, Tony Leondis’ The Emoji Movie smiled up an estimated $10.05 million from 4,075 locations. Reception for Emoji Movie has been – in a word – abhorrent. Sony’s $50m animation boasts a 6% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (avg. critic score being 2/10 from 35 reviews as of this writing) and a noteworthy 1.5/10 score on IMDb from over 4,700 ratings (fun fact: it is ranked #24 on the website’s Bottom Rated Movies). Emoji Movie’s rating on CinemaScore polls is a tad more positive: it earned a “B.” Currently, Emoji Movie is targeting $27 million for the weekend, though it is unclear how much the film’s negative reception will impact that number. Given the film’s production budget and its bad buzz, anything over $25m would be a win for Sony.

Coming in at number two, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk roped another $8 million from 3,748 venues, a -59.5% decline from its opening Friday. Warner Bros.’ war film now sits at $82.7m domestically. Dunkirk’s Friday-to-Friday drop is more in line with Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor (-53.7%) than Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper (-40%), and it should gross $28-29m. The chances of Dunkirk surpassing Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan ($216.5m) are slim, but its performance is still impressive with regards to the genre.

In number three, David Leitch’s Atomic Blonde took in $7.1 million from 3,304 locations. The Charlize Theron thriller debuted +30% higher than John Wick ($5.45m), and a similar performance from here would give Blonde an $18.7m weekend. That would be a healthy opening for the $30m spy film, as its positive notices (75% Rotten Tomatoes score and 7.2/10 IMDb rating) should keep it playing through August.

At number four, Malcolm D. Lee’s Girls Trip – courtesy of Universal – grossed $6.2 million from 2,648 locations, -47% off from its debut Friday. The $19m comedy has now totalled $51.6m. Girls Trip managed a better Friday-to-Friday hold than STX’s sleeper hit Bad Moms (-52.9%) – a promising sign. Girls Trip has a chance at eclipsing Atomic Blonde for the weekend, with a likely haul around $19m. Universal ought to be pleased.

Rounding out the top five is Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming, which slung $3.9 million into its coffers. The domestic total for Homecoming is $268.8m. Homecoming’s decline from its third Friday to its fourth (-38%) is the second-best for the franchise, coming just behind Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 (-37.7%), and it should take in $13.5m for the weekend.

That’s all for this Friday’s box office report. Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for the final weekend numbers.
