The newest in-game event has landed in Fortnite and left quite the impression. The volcano event, which has been in the works for the last couple of weeks thanks to runes and weird “challenges, finally happened at 3PM ET and took two of the game’s most popular landing spots with it.
You can check out everything that went down in the video below. The voting is from roughly 1:20 and the destruction kicks off at 4:40.
The volcano event started off at Loot Lake, which was the hub for most of the weirdness going on in Fortnite. As the clock ticked down to zero, players were taking down a shaft of light and, just as leakers had anticipated, were chosen to hit the item they wanted to see return. For some godforsaken reason, the Drum Gun was chosen as the majority by the community; its fans were like damn World War Z zombies in my game while the items were being picked. Another season, Tactical SMG.

Once the votes had been tallied, the other items returned underground and all players in the vicinity were lifted out of the vault. From the comfort of the sky, the whole lobby was able to watch as the volcano erupted and destroyed Retail Row first before moving on to Tilted Towers, which seems to be utterly decimated.
After the volcano’s destruction concluded, players were able to land and take part in Team Rumble as before. I landed at Tilted and came across quite the scene of destruction; the infamously bullied building is now the only one left standing.
Quite what this means for the World Cup and Season 9 is anyone’s guess. Tilted and especially Retail have been mainstays of the map for seasons and seasons, so to see them just be gone like this is a bit of a shock. I would be very interested in seeing what kind of Fortnite becomes now that Tilted, its most popular (and intense) spot, has now gone. I am also wondering whether this will be permanent — the Avengers event might end similarly to the movie, is all I am saying.
I also wonder how many minutes it will be until the Fortnite community regrets adding the no-skill, highly goddamn annoying Drum Gun back. Epic might be teaching these youngsters a lesson by destroying Tilted after getting what they want.
UPDATE: Epic clarified that the Drum Gun will not be at the upcoming WC.
The Drum Gun will not appear in the Fortnite World Cup Online Open this weekend.
