First Official Look At Zachary Levi In Shazam!

After various photos were leaked from the set, Entertainment Weekly have finally given us our first official look at Zachary Levi and Jack Dylan Grazer in the upcoming Shazam! movie. Apparently nobody told Warner Bros. that it’s considered bad luck to put punctuation in film titles, but either way, you can check out the image below.

Shazam! stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a teenage orphan who is transformed into an adult superhero named Shazam (played by Zachary Levi) after an ancient wizard bestows his powers onto him. The image shows Shazam in full costume alongside his best friend Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), with the two of them both enjoying a nice refreshing can of Cola. As you can probably tell from the image and the plot synopsis, Shazam! will be more comedic and lighter in tone than the previous DCEU movies, so don’t expect to see any dark brooding here. And don’t expect the hero and villain to suddenly become best friends after learning their mothers both have the same name either.

The Entertainment Weekly article also features a quote from the film’s costume designer David Sandberg, who explained that he made Shazam’s cape resemble its appearance in Golden Age comic books, while his hood (which is not shown in the picture) came straight out of the character’s more recent New 52 incarnation. The golden gauntlets were apparently inspired by Shazam’s animated movie appearances.

Shazam! is directed by David F. Sandberg, who also helmed the financially successful horror films Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation for Warner Bros. It also stars Djimon Hounsou, Mark Strong, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, and Lotta Losten, and will open in wide release on April 5, 2019. The film’s cinematographer, Maxime Alexandre, confirmed on Instagram that the first trailer will be shown at San Diego Comic-Con next week, but his post now appears to have been deleted. Either way, watch this space.
