First Mary Poppins Returns Trailer Released

Mary Poppins Returns 1

Mary Poppins Returns has released its first full-length trailer, following the teaser that came out a couple of months ago, and first glance seems to suggest that this is going to be exactly what you would want and expect from a sequel to Mary Poppins.

Emily Blunt, stepping into Julie Andrews’ shoes, is a great fit, and the first thing she does in the trailer is scold Ben Whishaw’s Michael, which is some nice symmetry from the original when the first thing she does is scold Michael.

And it all goes on from there. Mary Poppins is a tried and tested, timeless classic, and Disney would be mad to stray too far from it. So there’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, the new Dick Van Dyke, complete with his own slightly dodgy accent. There’s a number of adorable looking children, including a little one that you just know is going to steal the show. There’s stars aplenty, from Meryl Streep to Colin Firth to Angela Lansbury.

I wondered when I first heard about this film if they would have another animated section, and this trailer takes great delight in teasing it. The animation looks bright and cheery. Everyone is wearing beautiful costumes, and I’m pretty sure that I even saw a penguin, so we might be treated to a reprise of the tap dance.

Most importantly though, this trailer features at least a hint of a song being sung by Mary Poppins herself, and that was my biggest question of all. Disney have been a bit hit and miss with including songs in their new remakes of their classic films and I wasn’t sure if Mary Poppins Returns would have songs or not. This seems to suggest that it will, at least some, which both reassures me as a giant fan of the original and someone who has been looking forwards to this film since it was announced.

Oh, and Dick Van Dyke is there too – he’s well into his 90s but it looks to me like the man might be dancing. And if that isn’t something to look forwards to, I don’t know what is.
