Final Fantasy 16: How To Fast Travel

No Chocobo, no problem

Despite not being completely open world like its predecessor, Final Fantasy 16 has innumerable zones where you’ll be running around endlessly. Sometimes you’ll have to revisit areas in side quests or maybe you just want to backtrack and open a chest you passed by earlier, in either case, fast travel is the best way to get around quickly. In the prologue, you will be prompted to use fast travel in order to activate the main quests, however, free use of the mechanic will only be available to you once you’ve completed the prologue and have pushed through the story to a certain point.

To unlock fast travel in Final Fantasy 16, you have to complete Clive’s childhood tutorial area, and after that, play the story missions until you run into Obelisks, items which serve as points in Final Fantasy 16 to which you can fast travel to later. Complete the current story mission in which you encounter your first Obelisk, and once you’re not locked into any quest, open up the world map.

On the map screen, you’ll see many markers that represent locations. Hovering over the marker will allow you to fast travel to the given location by holding down the designated button. Another point to note is that not all locations require you to find Obelisks to visit them. Some areas will become available after completing story missions, and later in the area you can find Obelisks to teleport between different parts of that location.

There also are a lot of giant dungeons in Final Fantasy 16, and navigating through them becomes a pain since they are very large. Luckily, throughout the different dungeons, you can find Obelisks along the main path. This helps you to fast travel back-and-forth between different areas in a dungeon if need be.

Final Fantasy 16 might not be an open world game, but you can revisit almost all of its semi-linear spaces and loot the goodies you missed, so play quests, keep an eye out for Obelisks, and head back to an area whenever you want by fast traveling from the map screen.

Final Fantasy 16 is available now on PS5.
