The game isn’t necessarily failing in the UK, but it’s not exceeding its predecessor.

According to a report from gamesindustry.biz, FIFA 22 has underperformed compared to the previous release in the series in the UK, though it did still open at number 1 in the UK sales charts.

To put this decrease into further context, FIFA 21 also undersold FIFA 20, selling 42% fewer boxed copies at launch. However, these stats do not consider digital sales figures, and are only indicative of physical copies shipped and sold at launch in the UK.

In the report, GamesIndustry emphasizes that more players bought the game digitally than physically, possibly due to some discount deals offered by EA. Customers who are members of the EA Play subscription service (and Game Pass Ultimate which includes EA Play) got a 10% discount on buying FIFA 22 digitally. In addition, customers could also claim a further 10% discount for pre-ordering the game through a link in FIFA 21. In other words, by purchasing the game digitally instead of physically, certain players might have been able to get a 20% discount.

GamesIndustry goes on to further break down the sales data on FIFA 22: 64% of physical copies were on PlayStation consoles. Of those sales, 41% were on PS4 while 23% were on PS5. Beyond Playstation, 27% of FIFA 22 physical copies were on Xbox One, and 4% were on Xbox Series X. The digital-only Xbox Series S of course could not have any sales records for physical games. 5% of sales were on Switch, even though FIFA 22 on Switch is yet another “Legacy Edition,” which basically means it’s FIFA 19 with squad and kit updates, but little else to distinguish the game from its two previous Switch releases.
