We just brought you news of ‘Far Cry Primal’ possibly happening sometime thanks to Ubisoft’s little snafu, but the developer giant has moved quickly to capitalise on the buzz by releasing a reveal trailer.

It looks exactly like rumours suggested: a spin-off from the main series that focuses on prehistoric times. There seems to be an emphasis on working together with your fellow tribesmen to bring down goliaths, leading to an interesting mechanic only slightly touched on by previous games in the series.

However, it looks like that dynamic isn’t going to last long as you become separated from your group and must go it alone. According to the official blog:

“Far Cry Primal takes you back to the Stone Age when man was definitely not at the top of the food chain. Danger lurked around every corner during the daytime, and nighttime brought a fresh set of terrors. It is in the untamed land of Oros that you meet Takkar, the sole survivor of an ambush on his hunting group. Now on his own in a treacherous world, Takkar will face massive mammoths, savage sabretooth tigers, hostile bands of rival hunters, and countless other threats as he attempts to re-unite his lost tribe.”

Speaking about the game, creative director Jean-Christophe Guyot said: “The Stone Age is the perfect setting for a Far Cry game. Far Cry usually puts you at the edge of the known world, in a beautiful, lawless and savage frontier. The Stone Age is, in a way, the very first frontier for humankind; it’s the time when humans put a stick in the ground and claimed land for their own, the time when we started climbing the food chain. That came with conflict, against other humans of course, but also against nature itself.”

Quite how well the series transitions from being all guns blazing into a melee-driven affair remains to be seen; it might be a bit of a turn-off for fans of the series. What’s most peculiar about Primal is that fans were asked where they would like to see a new Far Cry take place – the Stone Age certainly wasn’t the winner. Whether this means that Far Cry 5 will be based on the vote or that it’s simply been left at the wayside is something worth keeping an eye on.

Far Cry Primal is scheduled for release on February 23, 2016 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The PC version will be released in March 2016
