Despite being one of our most disappointing games of 2015, Evolve still has a small place in our heart. You had the feeling like it initially meant well before 2K went too heavy-handed with the DLC, leaving a sour taste in the mouth.

Well, since Evolve went free-to-play, it’s had a bit of a renaissance. Before the big change, Evolve’s playerbase was effectively dead, rarely surpassing more than a few hundred concurrent players. In just over a week since the game was relaunched a free-to-play beta, it’s managed to earn 1 million new players. In fact, it’s even more popular now than it was at launch on PC, according to Steam Charts.

Turtle Rock Studios made the announcement via their Twitter account:

Thanks to the crazy figures, Turtle Rock are in a celebratory mood and will be giving out Griffin’s Blood Eagle Hunter skin for free. Just log in to Evolve: Stage 2 and it will be there waiting for you.

For any console players wondering where their free-to-play Evolve is, Turtle Rock have said that they are working on a uniform update between Xbox One and PS4 to make the whole process smoother. The wait is down to certification delays, which is what every game needs before it can publish updates.

The game has seen huge adjustments in the gameplay department as well, leading to quicker and more energetic matches – a lot of time was previously spent running around a map looking for the monster, which got tedious very quickly.
