One of the year’s most underrated horror games is now available as a free trial for anyone on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
The Evil Within 2, developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda, is the follow-to Shinji Mikami’s barmy survival horror. Just like its predecessor TEW 2 has been a bit of an acquired taste, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t at least give it a go, especially as you don’t really need to have played or completed the first game to “get” it.
The trial will be limited to the first three chapters, which includes a quick glance at the town of Union: a somewhat open area in which Sebastian can skulk around and discover sidequests, upgrades, and the like. All progress will carry over if you buy the game when prompted, including customisation.
Per my review of the game:
“Even with an uneven story and a couple of clumsy controls, The Evil Within 2 is an enthralling and dark sojourn that deserves to stand alongside Resident Evil 7 and Outlast 2 as one of the best survival horror games of 2017. It’s so good that I can almost forgive them for not letting me pet the cat. Almost.”
