Electronic Essentials: OWSLA, Black Tiger Sex Machine, Lucas & Steve

Electronic Essentials

Electronic music is known for its huge variety of sounds and styles, with thousands upon thousands of ever-different tracks being released every day. It is often impossible to know where to start so from time to time we will be selecting the best of the best in the scene to help you get the most out of one of the most varied and unpredictable genres.

OWSLA Worldwide Broadcast

Skrillex’s genre-defining label has been swiftly gathering recognition for its consistently ambitious output over the last couple of years and their latest compilation can be seen as the culmination of those releases. Worldwide Broadcast boasts 16 of the most original and hardest hitting tracks that the electronic scene has ever witnessed, with wacky and outlandish sounds skittishly hopping between genres accompanied by superb production in all areas. The tracklist reads like a barrage of blockbuster names, including Barely Alive, Boaz, Getter, Yellow Claw, Ghastly and (of course) Skrillex whose fiery ‘Red Lips’ remix perfectly sets the tone for the destructive album. Revolutionary.

Never Say Die Vol. 4

Speaking of ground-breaking, the similarly prestigious label Never Say Die unleashed the highly anticipated return of their semi-annual dubstep anthology and it delivered and then some. This album could be enough to elevate many members of the dubstep scene back into the limelight and give fame to some very underrated producers from the album, including Twine, Dr Ozi and Spag Heddy. Never Say Die manage to stick close to the powerful, bass heavy roots of the sound while promoting new sounds from all areas. Powerful.

Black Tiger Sex Machine – Welcome To Our Church LP

Long time stars of the electro scene, the masked trio return with another dose of razor-sharp, finessed synths and melodies that are as unpredictable as they are dark. Few producers can claim to tell a story through their tracks but BTSM whisk you away to a dark, twisted land with every listen. Distorted basses and powerful drums leave you with the firm impression that this is the true “metal” band of the future. Angry.

The Magician – Together (Lucas & Steve Remix)

The Magician crafted one of the tunes last year, and now ‘Together’ finally gets the remix it deserved. Building on the ever catchy vocals and hook of the original, house duo Lucas & Steve build on their excellent track record with a transformative and addictive drop that adds even more character to an already perfect record. Memorable.

Valentino Khan – Deep Down Low VIP

The most outrageous tune of 2015 and the most played by DJs across the scene, Khan offers a fresh spin on the party-starting original with even deeper hits and vocal chopping to die for. Combined with a trippy, haunting and truly one of a kind video for the original, it is clear to see why this is a universally appealing track and one that offers a fresh sound on every listen. Dark.

Speed Round
– Michael Calfan – Nobody Does It Better (The king of upbeat, Calfan returns with a pumped-up beat and some excellent sample-work)

– JACE MEK – Whales (Tchami’s Confession label continues to cover new ground with this unexpected thumper)

– Vato Gonzalez – Push Riddim (Another dirty house stormer from Gonzalez, who continues to make waves in the Spinnin’ scene)
