Is Efi Oladele Overwatch’s Latest Hero Reveal?

Efi Oladele is an eleven year old genius who, in an in-universe interview recently published by Blizzard on the official Overwatch site is described as “the most recent recipient of the Adawe Foundation’s prestigious “genius grant,” in recognition of her many accomplishments.”

Since the publication of this interview, there’s been lots of speculation from fans about quite what role Efi will play in the next Overwatch release. Will she be the game’s next playable hero? In short, no.

There were lots of reasons for assuming that she wouldn’t be our newest hero (mainly revolving around the fact that there’s something slightly twisted about being able to kill an eleven year old over and over again) but Jeff Kaplan, Game Director at Blizzard, has now confirmed this, stating: “Efi will play a part of the next playable character’s story, but that character has not been confirmed”, in a recent comment from Polygon.

So it seems that the next logical thing to do is to speculate wildly about quite who the next playable character will be, based on what information Blizzard has already given us. Fans’ most likely guess is that the next hero we’ll see on our selection screens will be Athena, the AI voice who announces in-game things like countdown timers and points scored during matches.

Fans have speculated for a long time that Athena would be added to the game (early on in the game’s release, people actually thought the art of her would be Sombra’s eventual form) but what makes things interesting is that Kaplan had a silhouette of Athena behind him during his recent DICE talk. Clever trolling, or something more significant? We’ll have to wait and see…
