The early reviews for Godzilla vs Kong are streaming in, and has received a 110 reviews at the time of this article. The film is currently still rated fresh, with a 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics heaping high praise on the CGI and visual effects of the monster battles. Of the critics who gave it a rotten rating, it seems the same issue keeps popping up, that there is lack of development when it comes to the human characters in the film.
This was the same concern critics had for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, where we saw a distinct difference in the critic’s score versus the audience’s score. For that film, Esther Zuckerman of Thrillist commented on brilliant actors “forced to play second fiddle to monsters whose powers of wonder wear off fast.” Nick Schager of The Daily Beast reflected the same issue: “Along the way, many fine actors are forced to navigate nonsensical situations and spout cornball dialogue.”
The critics (so far) are more complimentary of Godzilla vs Kong, with Kate Erbland of Indiewire praising the battles that go down, labelling them “some of the franchise’s best.” Mick LaSalle, in his review for the San Francisco Chronicle, laments that while the film “does its job” as a monster movie, it “lacks the power to inspire any emotion”.
Ultimately, if you are a fan of the older iterations, like Kong: Skull Island, which had good performances and story, then you would probably find yourself disappointed here. However, if monsters battling are what you came for, then it appears Godzilla vs Kong does deliver, albeit a rather hollow effort.
