A recent announcement from Codemasters (developers of the popular F1 racing games) revealed that the company will be taking on the team from Evolution Studios; the developers of the recent PS4 exclusive, Driveclub. This is following last month’s announcement from Sony that they would be shutting down Evolution – a company that worked under the videogame behemoth for over 10 years.

In a post on the Codemasters website, Christina McGrath (the social media manager for the company) stated, “We have very exciting news today. We’re delighted to announce that on the 25th April, Codemasters will be expanding its portfolio of studios to include the highly-respected and very talented team from Evolution Studios.”

So what does this mean for racing fans? Well, Codemasters and Evolution are known primarily for their work on huge racing franchises: you’ve got games like Motorstorm, DiRT, and, as mentioned, the recent Driveclub. So essentially, we’ll have two titans of the racing game industry working together on experiences that combine the talents of both companies. Additionally, it means that the IPs of either developer can crossover or blend – you could have the madcap mayhem of Motorstorm, but combined with Codemasters’ Micro Machines franchise.

Co-founder of Evolution Studios, Mick Hocking, had this to say: “I’m delighted to be joining Codemasters at such an exciting time in the company’s growth. We have a shared passion for racing, a desire to innovate and a determination to create the best racing games and build the biggest racing community in the market.”

Codemasters are celebrating their 30th birthday this year, so the news couldn’t have come at a better time. With the slew of popular racing games already on consoles, this partnering means that we’re only going to get more and more quality racing content. There’s never been a better time to be a petrol head.
