According to Akira Toriyama (creator of the Dragon Ball franchise), Broly was originally designed by him, but he was never directly involved in the production of the first three movies that featured Broly. In his official comments on the site, Akira wrote “Naturally you’ll get to see fierce combat, but also, the paths of destiny that lead to an encounter between Goku, Vegeta, and Broly.”

Although the film is a reboot, this addition of Broly to the main series now means that he is finally a canon character. Lastly, Akira said, “It also involves the Frieza Force and the history of the Saiyans, which end up having a major connection to everything. The story content turns out to be very large-scale and dramatic.”

Broly is a popular but one-dimensional character with a fairly boring backstory. Akira saw this movie as an opportunity to introduce him with a new origin story and hopefully, his backstory will make sense now. Because this film focuses on the Saiyan race, it will also explain the origins of a Saiyans’ strength and what it means to be a Saiyan.

Broly made his debut in the 1993 film Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, and one year later<, he made an appearance in Broly – Second Coming and Bio Broly.

The new Dragon Ball Super: Broly trailer will be revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 19th, and the movie is set to be released on December 14th, 2018 in Japan.
