Do you remember Jack the Giant Slayer? If you’re anything like me, the memory of it liquified and pooled out of your ears as soon as the credits rolled. It was okay. It was something. It just lacked the magic touch, whether it was because of the unconvincing lead or that the CGI looked like it belonged on the SyFy channel.

Despite the apparent disinterest in the Beanstalk mythos, Disney have announced at their D23 event that they will be making a new film exploring it by the name of Gigantic.

Helmed by Nathan Greno of Tangled fame and featuring music from Frozen’s Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Gigantic will be set in 15th century Spain. The film will follow Jack as he encounters an 11 year old girl…who is 60 foot-tall. The pair will then team up to try and stop the antagonistic Storm Giants as they wreak havoc in the world of giants.

Speaking at the panel, Gigantic‘s director said he hopes it “will become the definitive version of Jack and the Beanstalk.”

Not much was shown of the new film, although Disney fans were treated to several stills of concept art. With a release date of 2018, they will have a lot of time to get the formula just right and do justice to the original source material. Call me a cynic, but there’s only so many times you can tell the same story over and over again before your family’s love for you fades so much that they have to put you in a care home.
