Disintegration Tips: How To Take Down A Thunderhead

Thunderstruck-down.

Disintegration

Disintegration doesn’t have much in the way of bosses. The Blackout Tower is a one-time fight, and there’s a certain Gravcycle fight in the game’s second half against a notable enemy, but there’s only one other enemy that could be considered anything close to a boss, and it’s more like a mini-boss in all honesty.

The Thunderhead makes its first appearance at the end of the game’s sixth level, Jailbreak, and it’s death on hydraulic legs. The Thunderhead has two main attacks, a rocket barrage and a ground stomp that can massacre your entire squad. Naturally, you’ll want to command your squad to keep their distance, otherwise you’ll be scraping their brain cans off the floor.

Disintegration

In order to beat this gargantuan robot, you’ll need to utilise staggering in your favour. As we’ve outlined in the beginner’s tips piece, staggering allows you to do increased damage while stunning your enemy, and here it’s the most useful strategy. The best ways to stagger a Thunderhead involve a ground slam (followed quickly by getting the hell out of there), a concussion grenade or a mortar strike. Slow fields are also useful at maximising staggered time, allowing for more damage to occur.

Once you’ve drained the beast’s lifebar, it’ll drop down to its knees, exposing its vulnerable nodes on either side of the machine’s main chassis. This is where you deal some real damage to the Thunderhead. There are two nodes on each side, and all four have to be destroyed in order to vanquish the machine.

Disintegration

You’ll have to get in close to actually be able to see and destroy said nodes, and you’ll only be able to destroy one side per cycle, and that’s if you’re quick enough. By that time, some of your squad’s cooldowns should have returned, so you stagger the big lad again, destroy the other side and enjoy the glory that comes with killing a Thunderhead. Now just get ready to deal with another 10 until the credits roll.
