After years of being awkwardly stranded on old hardware and other storefronts, Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2 have finally landed on Steam. Capcom has randomly brought both PS1-era cult favourites to modern PC. Bear in mind that these are pretty basic ports according to reviews, not even featuring achievements or Steam Deck compatibility(!).
Originally released in 1999, Dino Crisis was often described as “Resident Evil with dinosaurs,” which isn’t wrong, but also undersells it a bit. Directed by Shinji Mikami, it swaps shambling zombies for fast, aggressive prehistoric predators. You play as Regina, a red-haired special agent sent to investigate a research facility where a secret energy experiment has gone very wrong. The fixed cameras and puzzle-heavy structure will feel familiar if you’ve played late-’90s survival horror, but the dinosaurs change the tempo completely.
Then there’s Dino Crisis 2, which throws subtlety out the window. Instead of slow-burn tension, it’s more into arcade-style action, combo scores, and much bigger firefights. It is absolutely not survival horr. Regina returns, this time heading into a time-displaced jungle packed with dinosaurs and stranded survivors, but you also get to play as Dylan. It’s louder, faster, and arguably one of Capcom’s most underrated action sequels from that era.
They’ve also launched with a 50% discount, which makes them as cheap as £3.99 in the UK. Honestly, it’s just good to see these games easily available again, but it’s a shame they didn’t put too much effort into them.
Must be in order to make a remake/fourth game look even better, right?
