We’re Taking A Different Approach With Our Call of Duty Review This Year

History dictates that we ought to keep a close eye on this one post-launch.

Modern Warfare

Let’s make this quick: we weren’t invited to the (somewhat eyebrow-raising) review event for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and we haven’t requested code for the game, either.

The latter is because we would be expected to turn around a review quickly for Activision PR, but we are going to take our sweet time this year with a retail version instead — and also see if Activision take their sweet time before adding questionable monetisation to the game post-launch.

Though Activision have previously stated that they won’t be adding loot boxes to the game, they also said that CTR wouldn’t have microtransactions but added them after positive reviews, that the original Modern Warfare remaster wouldn’t be available separately from Infinite Warfare before then selling it separately, and also snuck in loot boxes after strong reviews for Black Ops 4.

History has shown that what Activision say and what Activision do are two very different things.

For that reason, we will be playing Modern Warfare at our own pace and putting together an in-progress, unscored review, which will be finalised with a score one or two months after the game’s release.

We feel it’s important to not rush reviews out for deadlines and embargoes in general, and doubly so when a game may indulge in contentious practices once the limelight dims.
