They've gotten hitched, so time to buy a wedding present, I guess?

Devolver Digital have today announced that they’ve acquired the Serious Sam developers Croteam for an undisclosed amount of money. The two teams have had a long standing relationship that dates back to way before they worked together on the release of Serious Sam 3 nearly a decade ago.

How Did This Deal Come About?

In a blog post regarding the announcement, Devolver Digital revealed that the relationship between themselves and Croteam has been established for years, as Devolver was co-founded by the same people behind Gathering of Developers, who helped to publish the first Serious Sam. In a way, it’s all come full circle.

The blog goes on say: “Croteam and Devolver Digital have partnered on dozens of games – from the frantic Serious Sam series to the award-winning The Talos Principle across PC, consoles, VR and mobile platforms. Croteam and Devolver Digital have been dating for so long that we decided to go ahead and just get married.”

What Does This Mean For The Future?

The post confirms that we’ll see Croteam and Devolver work together on The Talos Principle 2, more entries in the Serious Sam IP and some original IP from both Croteam and the various Croteam Incubator studios, with Croteam retaining total creative freedom. With studio acquisitions becoming more and more common place, it’s nice to see one like Croteam and Devolver that just feels like the next natural step in their working relationship. Congrats on the engagement.
