Dead Island 2 Isn’t Dead After All, Insists Deep Silver

Dead Island 2, one of the most conspicuously absent sequels we’ve ever come across, has gone totally radio silent over the last year.

It was announced in 2016 that Sumo Digital (who have a proven track record of salvaging troubled video game projects) would be taking the reins from Yager after differences in opinion between they and publisher Deep Silver. Since then, we’ve heard barely a groan from either camp with Yager going bankrupt as a result.

Almost two years after it was scheduled to be released, Dead Island 2 is still nowhere to be seen, but following correspondence with Eurogamer, Deep Silver have confirmed that it hasn’t quietly shuffled off of the undead coil:

“Dead Island 2 is in development at Sumo Digital, and we are excited by the progress the team are making with Deep Silver’s most successful IP. When we are ready to share more information, we will.”

It’s good to know that it still exists, but even the most ardent of Dead Island fans have cause for concern. Apart from its reveal trailer and some screenshots, Dead Island 2 is a total stranger to the gaming public. Back when it had been AWOL for a long time without any updates whatsoever, I even cried to the skies and demanded answers. To show how long the wait has been, coverage of Dead Island 2’s trailer edited in reverse was one of the first things we ever published here on Cultured Vultures. There have been roughly 5800 articles published since then.

Wishful thinking, but maybe it will be one of the games we see at E3 2017? Watch this space. As long as it’s a decent follow-up to one of the best zombie games ever made, it should do just fine.
