Dead Island 2: Does It Have Cross-Play & Cross-Platform?

Nothing brings friends together quite like slaying some zombies, and that’s exactly what Dead Island 2 provides, keeping up the brain-bopping tradition from its two previous games. A lot has changed since the release of the original Dead Island in the industry, including the broad adoption of allowing players across different systems to play with each other. So does Dead Island 2 support cross-play?

Dead Island 2 does not support cross-play in the fullest sense, and instead only allows players within the same family of systems to play cross-platform. This means that PC players can only play with PC players, only Xbox players can play with Xbox players, and only PlayStation players can play with PlayStation players.

Here’s a quick table to break down Dead Island 2 cross-play and which systems can play with which:

Bear in mind that players on Xbox and PlayStation will all need to have Xbox Live/Game Pass or PlayStation Plus to be able to play online. In addition, as of April 2023, players on Xbox One and PS4 cannot currently host matches, which will be patched in an update due for early summer. Finally, Dead Island 2 operates on peer-to-peer, so make sure that the person hosting the session has the best connection out of all of you.

Will Full Cross-Play Come To Dead Island 2?

There’s been no mention of full cross-play ever coming to Dead Island 2, but that doesn’t mean it won’t at some point down the line as post-launch support for cross-play becomes more frequent for many co-op games. However, considering nothing has been promised, and also considering how games like Dying Light 2 still don’t have full support, we wouldn’t hold your breath for the same to happen with Dead Island 2.

Dead Island 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X & S.
