Dark Souls Board Game Hammers Past £1.5 Million on Kickstarter

The Kickstarter for the Dark Souls board game is garnering massive support, having just passed £1.5 million.

Based upon the hugely popular video game of the same name (try saying that 3 times quickly), the crowdfunding passed its original goal of £50,000 in a mere three minutes. Since then, it continued to climb rapidly until it reached where it is now. This comes as no surprise, really, considering the game is officially created in partnership with Souls’ publishers Bandai Namco – ideally, this means that it could have the same quality and polish as the games themselves.

Having hit the stretch goal of £1.5 million, players have unlocked ‘Havel’s Set’ to play with in the game; an iconic armour set worn within the Souls franchise. And yet there’s still more to go! If the Kickstarter reaches £1.65 million (which is entirely possible, considering it’s almost at £1.6 million at the time of writing), then two more armour sets will be added to the package.

The game proves to be faithful to the original Souls games, and early reactions are positive. Kotaku has said of the game, “The attention to detail is astounding, and the figures might be worth it on their own.”

The Kickstarter page also features a video advertising the board game (above), as well as fan reactions to what they’ve played. An interesting point to note is that the game carries over the core mechanics of combat from the main titles. One fan commented how you need to conserve your stamina when attacking, which is a factor directly lifted from the core game itself.

The project is set to continue funding until May 16th, so who knows how much it will accrue by then. If it manages to capture the intense entertainment provided by the Souls games, then I might need to pick up a copy myself.
