Daily Tune: Phaeleh – Galaxies

Phaeleh has come a long way since starting out. The Bristolian native initially made a name for himself making relatively chilled dubstep with a something of a jazzy edge to it. Since then he’s transitioned into more ambient, ethereal material, working closely with vocalists like Augustus Ghost and Soundmouse. On Friday, he brought out his eighth full album – Lost Time.

Like the last two albums, Illusion of the Tale and A World Without, it plays out like the score to a film which doesn’t exist. From the orchestral swell of the albums opener, Oceans’, you immediately feel like there’s some real emotional significance to it, like there’s a narrative. A lot of it is reminiscent of late nineties/early noughties downtempo artists like Zero 7 or even Bonobo’s early work. Only a few tracks have been released on YouTube thus far, but one of them is Galaxies, one of the album’s most prominent highlights.

Galaxies harkens back to some of Phaeleh’s earlier work in some ways, especially the broken, punchy percussion, but it also offers one of the best melodic ascents he’s ever produced. As a whole, Lost Time is easily one of the most consistent albums Phaeleh has made, and yet it feels like an important milestone in his career. He’s released dance-floor tailored, beat driven material in the past and he’s released ambient material. Often, his full albums feature a mixture of both, but in the case of Lost Time, almost every track contains elements from both sides.
