Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2 – Everything You Should Know

Edgerunners Season 2
Edgerunners Season 2

Saying that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the anime adaptation of the infamous Cyberpunk 2077 created by CD Projekt Red, blew us away is an understatement. Considering its sky-high success, and it becoming an instant hit among the anime community, what’re the chances of us seeing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2?

The prequel anime has helped to ease the negativity surrounding the game, and years later from its launch, the title has reached a new all-time high for players. The anime’s 10-episode-long take on Night City’s cyberware dystopia was an exhilarating ride from start to finish, and fans still have an appetite left for more with Season 2.

When Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2  Coming Out?

At the moment, neither Studio Trigger nor Netflix has confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2 is in the works, and by the looks of it, there don’t seem to be any plans for a continuation to release soon either.

The official Twitter account for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the game, both have thanked fans for the wonderful reception, so even though nothing’s set in stone, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if a second season was announced.

In fact, CD Projekt Red’s Japanese community manager Satoru Honma has said there are no plans to continue the anime in an interview with Famitsu:

“I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback. However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background’.”

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 1 was supposedly going to be a one-off scenario, but the amazing response and demand for more does make you wonder how far the franchise could go.

What Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2 About? (Spoiler Alert)

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 1 left almost everyone teary-eyed by its finale. Maine and Dorio’s death was already brutal, but when Adam Smasher murdered Rebecca and David, that was the final nail in the coffin for all fans who wanted a happy ending. Only Lucy and Falco managed to escape, and that’s sadly all that’s left of the cast.

With Lucy finally reaching the Moon, the prequel is completed and the events of the game follow thereafter. If Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2 were to happen, it’s presumably going to be about a new group of Edgerunners. And as for when, it could either be set after the events of the Cyberpunk 2077 game or as a story running parallel to David or V’s.

Which Studio Is Making Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2?

Studio Trigger made the first season, and we expect that the team will also animate Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2 due to the huge praise they’ve received about the anime since its release. While CD Projekt Red created much of the story, with Bartosz Sztybor taking narrative lead, Trigger contributed to the creation of the characters, especially Rebecca since it was revealed that CDPR didn’t want to include her in the cast at first.

Trigger’s choices worked out in a big way, and if they do make Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2, the fandom wouldn’t be happier.

Where Will Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2 Be Aired?

The anime is among the line-up of exclusives for Netflix‘s streaming service. Currently, there don’t seem to be any plans for the anime to arrive on Crunchyroll or other platforms, which means if Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 2 does happen, then you’ll only be able to stream it via a Netflix subscription.

Edgerunners has been soaring through the rankings at an unbelievable pace, and it still shows no signs of stopping. At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before CD Projket Red and Studio Trigger officially announces Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – Season 2, so keep your fingers crossed.
