Cyberpunk Edgerunners

A few years ago, CD Projekt Red (CDPR) released their first-person RPG Cyberpunk 2077. Due to its innumerable bugs, the game went down in history as having the worst possible launch, but unexpectedly even after immense backlash, a spin-off anime labeled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was announced to be in development over at Netflix.

The concept behind the franchise was well received, but the execution was where CDPR lost track. Now Netflix is releasing an anime, and from what they’ve shown so far in the trailers for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, we can gather that the anime won’t be a technical mess like the game. Studio Trigger, the massively appreciated production house behind Kill La Kill, Star Wars: Visions, and Promare is behind the anime project, so judging from their track record, it’s safe to say the studio won’t be messing anything up.

But will the anime being produced by a great company redeem the franchise of its past mistakes? That’s something that’ll differ by perspective, so for now let’s take an overview of everything pertaining to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, including when it releases and what it’s about.

When Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 1 Coming Out?

In the recent trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Netflix officially confirmed that the anime will be available to stream on September 13th, 2022. The anime is scheduled for a 10-episode first season, and whether we’ll get to see a continuation will depend on how well it performs.

As you may know from the game, Cyberpunk allows you to pick any one of the three available character classes; Nomad, Corpo, and Street Kid. The anime is based on the Street Kid iteration from the game, which will explore the ruthlessness of its bionic world brimming with organized crime.

What Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Season 1 About? (Spoiler Alert)

Dive into a reworked version of Night City, a spiteful metropolis prowling with people using body enhancement modifications, from quirky visual implants to chips embedded inside their minds, all for the purpose of becoming a Cyberpunk legend. Not every detail has been revealed about the plot, but here’s a glance at everything confirmed so far.

In the anime, you’ll be introduced to David, a street kid who hopes to find his place in the world. Destiny eventually leads him to Lucy, an outlaw hacker who introduces her lifestyle to David. Aspiring to make a name for himself, David decides to live every day as his last and ultimately ventures down the path of becoming an “Edgerunner” like Lucy.

While it’s easy to get excited after watching the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners trailer for the first, it’s best not to raise your expectations to surreal levels. The anime irrefutably looks phenomenal, but looks can be deceiving, something which Cyberpunk fans know better than most. And with that, we recommend that you gear up as Night City returns with a thrilling new arc in September 2022 only on Netflix.
