Cyberpunk 2077 Will Have Only One Loading Screen

Cyberpunk 2077

Yup, you read that right. Only one loading screen. CD Projekt Red’s associate design director on Cyberpunk 2077, Kyle Rowley, confirmed on Discord and first reported by spieltimes, that after the initial title screens there will be no further loading screens during play.

The highly anticipated open world RPG, which has drawn likenesses to Blade Runner, Deus Ex and Fifth Element for its artistic direction, was recently showcased at this year’s E3 conference in Los Angeles, California.

While this isn’t exactly earth-shattering news regarding CD Projekt Red’s new IP, it does shed a little neon light on how the game will be played. A lack of loading screens during play suggests that the game’s six regions are consistently connected and will not require a menu to travel between them like the kind we used in The Witcher 3.

CD Projekt Red’s quest designer Patrick Mills, who worked on The Witcher 3 and is currently working on Cyberpunk, explained in a recent interview with Kotaku how Cyberpunk 2077’s quest structure will differ from The Witcher 3’s.

Cyberpunk 2077

Quests in The Witcher 3 were based on protagonist Geralt’s skillset and knowledge and were clearly devised to play to those characteristics. In Cyberpunk 2077, there are three different archetypes: the Solo, the Techie, and the Netrunner, which can be mixed and matched to create your characters skill set.

This means that the quest design must be developed to incorporate every potential path of character progression and the unique abilities that each chosen step in the skill trees provide.

So essentially each quest must have 3 different directions to take. That’s before you factor in environmental design, creating pathways during quests that allow characters with different abilities to take alternate routes to completing the objective.

That sounds like a hell of a lot of work to me so it’s understandable why Cyberpunk has been in development for so long. Still no official release date yet and we’re still a way off with speculation circling that a release in 2020 is more than likely. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be lapping up every little tidbit of information about the game until then.
