Just in from the Critics’ Choice nominations announcement, and it was a good day for The Favourite, which leads all films today with 12 nominations in the major categories. Its trio of leading ladies all scored nominations, it’s also up for Picture and Director, Original Screenplay, and a ton of technical nominations.

Next up, a big surprise, First Man, which was on life support up til this morning, but punched back hard with 10 nominations in the majors, including Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, and another 5 nominations in the tech categories.

Obviously some of the biggest inclusions here are First Man’s love in the top categories, where it seemed all was lost. Now it has Critics’ Choice in its corner, which may help it going forward. Willem Dafoe continues his march to a possible Oscar nom with another nod here today. After Globes and Critics’ Choice, he may end up with Oscar, too. Toni Collette is another surprise here today with her Lead Actress nod for Hereditary. While she didn’t score at the Globes, she may still be in the hunt for the Oscar. Adam McKay and Peter Farrelly both scored a nomination in Best Director, proving they’re not just Globes favorites. One last surprise in the top categories was A Quiet Place, which missed out for Picture and acting prizes, but still scored a Best Original Screenplay nomination.

Of the exclusions, there’s less to say, but that’s mainly because so many of these categories have seven nominees, which will not happen at the Oscars, so it was easy to get everybody in today. Even with seven Best Director nominees, Ryan Coogler and Barry Jenkins were left out, and unfortunately for them, it may be the end of the line, unless they strike hard with nominations from the Directors Guild next month. Seven nominees in Best Actor, but John David Washington from BlacKkKlansman wasn’t one of them. His nod at the Globes may be a red herring for future nominations, but we’ll have to wait and see. One more is Michelle Yeoh, and Crazy Rich Asians as a whole. Not only did Michelle miss, but no nominations for Screenplay or Picture, either. It only received a nod for its Ensemble and Production Design.

The Critic’s Choice Awards 2019 is being held on January 14th, 2019.
