Activision and Treyarch have announced that the recent open beta for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was become the most downloaded Call of Duty beta of all time. Figures haven’t been revealed, but it does beat the previous record holder, Modern Warfare. The news was announced via the tweet below.

Why Was This Call of Duty Beta So Successful?

There’s a number of factors that could explain that one. Firstly, the majority of the beta was open for all players to download across platforms, meaning you don’t have to rely on pre-orders to sustain the beta population.

Secondly, we’re right at the end of the PS4 and Xbox One lifecycles, with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S lurking just around the corner. The install base for both platforms is the highest its going to ever be, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was able to capitalise on that. Lastly, we’re still in the midst of the global pandemic, meaning there’s more people stuck at home looking for something to do, so why not play the Call of Duty beta, eh?

When Can We Play The Full Game?

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13th for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The standard edition of the game can be played cross-platform via backwards compatibility, but the cross-gen bundle, which is slightly more expensive, ensures you’ll receive the next-gen version once you buy the new console.
