BioWare Montreal: Mass Effect: Andromeda Dev Merged With EA Motive

Mass Effect Andromeda

Few might have envisioned quite how catastrophically 2017 would pan out for the guys at BioWare Montreal. After the -let’s just say- polarising reception to Mass Effect: Andromeda, the team have been gradually shrunk down and outsourced to other EA projects.

Now, as relayed to TechRaptor, EA have confirmed that BioWare Montreal are in the process of being fully merged with EA Motive, effectively ending their status as a studio.

“The teams in EA Worldwide Studios are packed with talent, and more than ever, we’re driving collaboration between studios on key projects.”

“With multiple major projects in development in Montreal, we are merging BioWare Montreal with Motive Studios. This is an ongoing process, but there are many exciting roles and opportunities for everyone on the team.”

Formed in 2009 to work on Mass Effect DLC and multiplayer, BioWare Montreal were eventually tasked with creating a new game in the Mass Effect franchise. Millions of dollars, several billion YouTube montages, and a whole lot of memes later and Andromeda released to middling reviews and so-so sales.

As part of the Motive team, the remaining staff from BioWare Montreal will presumably assist with the making of Star Wars Battlefront 2’s single-player campaign, as well as an as yet unannounced Star Wars game. Before the studio was fully absorbed, staff from BioWare Montreal were also drafted over to BioWare Montreal to help with the upcoming Anthem.

It’s crazy how quickly the industry moves sometimes. Andromeda was only just released in March and now the people who made it have been packed up and shunted off to work on another project. While there are plenty of whispers and half-truths about what exactly went wrong with Andromeda, it’s probably a collection of many different problems that rocked the (space) boat more than one definitive thing. Still, at least most of them are keeping their jobs.
