Our 50 best games of the year countdown isn’t in any order, we’re just going through fifty of the finest the year has given us. Find out more here.

Pokemon Sun/Moon is the newest instalment in the massive Pokemon series that still brings in the dollar for GameFreak.

For a stupidly simple formula, it’s amazing just how successful this franchise has become. From games, to cards, to films, to every kind of accessory going, Pokemon still manages to bring in the money and 2016 hasn’t been any different.

After the success of the game’s predecessors, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire and the huge phenomenon that was Pokemon Go, it’s no wonder that Pokemon Sun/Moon was well received by the gaming community.

For this outing of the game, they have changed the format of the game considerably, hoping to appeal to the next generation of fans and also still bring those hardcore fans under their wing. Set in the Hawaii version of a Pokemon game, instead of Gyms we have trials and island Kahunas to square off against and the Pokedex has swelled yet again, adding over 100 new species to catch and evolve.

Although I did find the main story of the game wanting, I still had great fun playing this. Pokemon has improved graphically and there are a lot of nice little extras such as seeing the opposing trainer whilst we are yelling orders to our team leader.

What I enjoyed about this game though is just how well developed each of the Islands were and also how clean the mechanics of the game still ran, nearly twenty years later. Although it does take over an hour to actually get going, when it does find its feet it really is a little gem.

The newer fans of the series may love the new and improved version of this game, but for older fans, like myself, I struggled to get behind it and on occasion did find it a chore to get to the end of the game.

But with no added DLC for you to get to flesh the game out, it is well worth picking up for any fan of the series and for someone who wants to relive their childhood and try and Catch ‘Em All.
