Ben Affleck’s Batman Appearance in The Flash Promises Emotional Impact

And what his reappearance means for Robert Pattinson's The Batman.

In an article from Vanity Fair, we learn that Ben Affleck will be reprising his role as Batman in the upcoming The Flash. He joins Ezra Miller, who will of course play the titular character, as well as Micheal Keaton’s Batman from the Tim Burton films.

The Flash movie, which is planned for a summer 2022 release, will feature speedster Barry Allen (Miller), who crashes into various parallel dimensions, where he’ll encounter slightly different versions of DC’s classic heroes. This is why both Affleck and Keaton’s Batmans are making an appearance.

It’s an adaptation of DC’s 2011 Flashpoint series of comic book crossovers, directed by Andy Muschietti, the filmmaker behind the recent adaptations of Stephen King’s It novels. Muschietti spoke about Affleck’s role in the film: “He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before,” the director added. “It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”

Muschietti also appreciates that Affleck can sees things from a filmmaker’s point of view, since the actor has been on both sides of the camera.

What does this mean for Robert Pattinson’s The Batman? Well, it should remain entirely unaffected, since The Flash is dealing with the multi-verse, so it doesn’t have to establish any coherence with Matt Reeves’ film. Hopefully The Flash will give some closure for Affleck’s Batman, especially since he never got to star in a solo film, and also gives us something to look forward to.
