Hell hath no fury like a scorned Star Wars fan. EA found that out the hard way last week when fans rallied against the business practices introduced into Battlefront 2, including pay-to-win mechanics and a laborious grind to unlock content. The list of Battlefront 2 controversies doesn’t make for happy reading for anyone over at EA and DICE – they’ve been put to the sword.
And it seems that the backlash has directly impacted sales. Battlefront 2 shifted 60% less physical copies than its predecessor, the 2015 reboot. The decision to temporarily remove microtransactions from the game might have arrived a little too late.
Battlefront 2 was ousted by Call of Duty: WWII, which is expected because, well, it’s Call of Duty, but EA may have been anticipating greater results from the sequel to the game that had some pretty solid opening numbers. Digital is certainly on the rise and makes more headway each year, but it’s only been two years since the reboot – that’s far too steep of a decline for Battlefront 2’s failings to be pinned solely on that.
Here’s the top ten from UKIE in full:
Call of Duty: WW2
Star Wars Battlefront 2
FIFA 18
Pokémon Ultra Sun
Pokémon Ultra Moon
Assassin’s Creed Origins
The Sims 4
LA Noire Remastered
Super Mario Odyssey
Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2
