Battlefield V Battle Royale Mode In Prototype Stage At DICE

Battlefield

According to a new report from VentureBeat, EA’s DICE studio are currently in the prototype stages of testing a battle royale mode for their upcoming Battlefield V, much to the surprise of no one. If there’s money to be made or a trend to be followed, EA won’t be far behind.

The report states that the team are trying to understand how a battle royale game would work within the confines of Battlefield’s regular mechanics, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that Battlefield V will have this mode. It’s only in the prototype phase right now, and if it does work, the team won’t be able to get it finished before release.

If the mode does get the greenlit, there’s still no guarantee we’ll see it as part of Battlefield V, as VentureBeat note that they could save it for a future Battlefield or Star Wars: Battlefront release, or even try to spin it off into its own stand-alone release. However, with the trend of battle royale being as popular as it is right, it’s better to strike whilst the iron is hot and not tepid.

With Fortnite and PUBG effectively having a stranglehold on the battle royale trend, it will be interesting to see how a mode tied to a big franchise release like Battlefield or the rumoured Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 battle royale mode will upset the balance of power. For our money, they’ll either be huge success stories or fall flat on their face.

What do you think about the idea of a Battlefield Battle Royale? One thing is for certain is that it needs a better name, but let us know your thoughts in the comments, and check out the changes that are coming to genre stablemate Halo: The Master Chief Collection. No, it’s not getting a battle royale mode as well.
