Battleborn Being Taken Behind Shed and Shot In 2021

Battleborn

Battleborn, the hero shooter of 2016 that never really exploded into life, is shutting down, Gearbox has announced.

The tweets from the official Battleborn account marked the first of any kind from the account since August.

It’s not for a long while, though, with 2K deactivating the servers in January 2021 and the ability to purchase currency being removed from February 24th, though this can still be earned through gameplay. Basically, don’t buy anything in the game from now on.

Despite them being plenty different, Battleborn’s initial resemblance to Blizzard’s Overwatch has been seen as a source for its underwhelming commercial performance with most copies of the game available for just a handful of notes a few months after launch. Publisher 2K pretty much admitted that the game had flopped hard with a move to F2P not doing much to ease its woes. Gearbox haven’t updated the game in a long time.

With this deactivation of the servers, Battleborn will be completely unplayable; not even any of its single-player content will be playable. If that doesn’t make you wary of the always online future, I don’t know what will.

Overwatch, meanwhile, will be getting a sequel with single-player sometime in the next few years.
