Barry Jenkins Has Found His Next Project in Alvin Ailey Biopic

"Dance is for everybody. I believe that the dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people."

According to Deadline, Academy-Award winner Barry Jenkins has found his follow-up to If Beale Street Could Talk: A biopic about the late choreographer Alvin Ailey, a legend in the dance community.

The film does not have a title or release date yet, but Jenkins will produce the film through Fox Searchlight. Of course, with Disney acquiring everything Fox, this means Disney is the official distributor and Fox Searchlight is just another subsidiary company of the Mouse-House.

Before the acquisition, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater signed over all their cooperation, meaning that the biography that was the basis for the script and the dances featured in the film will all be approved by the very company that Ailey set up before his passing. Even with Disney in charge, this deal will remain intact. So for those out there who thought the Disney acquisition was a doom and gloom story, this is one area where Disney is leaving well enough alone.

A lot of talented hands are in the mix, including Jenkins. The script, based on the biography “Alvin Ailey: A Life in Dance” comes from Julian Breece, who penned the Ava-Duvernay Netflix miniseries When They See Us, which just premiered last Friday (May 31st, 2019). Among the seven producers on the film is Alicia Keys, with this movie marking her debut as a film producer.

Jenkins did great work on Moonlight, and surpassed himself with Beale Street, one of the best films of 2018. So whatever he has coming down the pike next is definitely worth our undivided attention.
