Apex Legends’ Octane Is A Neat Nod To Titanfall 2 Easter Egg

Speed kills, but apparently grenades don't.

Apex Legends Octane 1

Octane is the first Legend added to Apex Legends since launch, but his genesis may actually be a lot earlier than we first thought as a nod to one of the best FPS games ever made. Yeah, that’s right: go play Titanfall 2 sometime.

Octane’s video overview goes over his abilities and shows him basically showing off, but it also references his past in which he blew off his own legs to get faster in a gauntlet speedrun.

An excerpt from his bio:

“One day, Octavio Silva was bored. In fact, he was bored most days. Heir to the preoccupied CEOs of Silva Pharmaceuticals and wanting for nothing in life, he entertained himself by performing death-defying stunts and posting holovids of them for his fans to gawk over. So, this day, he decided to set the course record for a nearby Gauntlet by launching himself across the finish line – using a grenade.

Eagle-eyed players have noticed this seems to be in reference to the superhuman speedrun by YouTuber Cash Mayo in which they use grenades to give themselves extra momentum and absolutely stomp around The Gauntlet.

The record sits at 12 seconds, which is considerably quicker than the next closest time on the official leaderboards, a record that many didn’t think would ever topped. It’s a thing of insane beauty with the kind of precision I could only ever dream of.

Just in case you needed further proof that Octane was inspired by this feat, here’s a comparison.

A great little callback if it’s true, but Respawn have yet to confirm the theory. They have prior with this kind of thing, though: Nessy can be found all around the Apex map, which is a reference to the first Titanfall game.

From our Apex Legends review:

“Even the most jaded of battle royale fans will find their interest rejuvenated by Apex Legends thanks to Respawn’s attention to detail, superior gunplay, and fantastic innovations, though the loot boxes and progression system certainly need addressing.”
