Andrzej Sapkowski Makes No Money From The Witcher Games (And It’s His Fault)

Did you know that CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher video game series is actually based on a series of books by a Polish author? Of course you did. But did you also know that Andrzej Sapkowski has no time for video games, going so far as to publicly declare his dislike for the famous RPG series?

Well, it might be because he has a chip on his shoulder. According to the man himself in a recent interview with Eurogamer, he earns nothing from CD Projekt Red’s surely already iconic franchise in terms of royalties. Not a single złoty. And it’s all because he wanted a lump sum of money.

In the interview, Sapkowski aired his grievances:

“I was stupid enough to sell them rights to the whole bunch. They offered me a percentage of their profits. I said, ‘No, there will be no profit at all – give me all my money right now! The whole amount.’ It was stupid. I was stupid enough to leave everything in their hands because I didn’t believe in their success. But who could foresee their success? I couldn’t.”

Although the one payment was probably substantial, it might have been even more if he’d bided his time on royalties. The Witcher 3 is one of the most revered and successful games in history, which is to say nothing of its predecessors’ success, too.

Oh well. He’s still the literary king of Poland. While you’re here, why not found out why the latest Witcher rumours are a crock of drowner dung?
