Netflix just released the official trailer for Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy, starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close in what looks to be powerhouse performances. The trailer also reminds us that Adams and Close are still Academy Award nominees, and honestly, both are long overdue for the Best Actress Oscar.

What’s It About?

Hillbilly Elegy is based on the memoir by J.D Vance, and is Vance’s personal story regarding his experience and journey with his family. Vance is played by Gabriel Basso, who is on the verge of landing his dream job when a family crisis forces him to return to the home he has tried to forget.

Amy Adams and Glenn Close play his mother and grandmother respectively, the pair burdened with the struggle of finding work and raising their family, with Adams’ Bev facing her own personal struggles with addiction as well.

Who’s Involved?

The cast also includes Haley Bennett, Freida Pinto, Bo Hopkins and Owen Asztalos. Vanessa Taylor, who wrote the screenplay for The Shape of Water, wrote the script for the film. Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Karen Lunder are producing for Imagine Entertainment, while Julie Oh and J.D. Vance will executive produce.

Hillbilly Elegy has been in development since 2017, when Imagine Entertainment acquired the rights to Vance’s memoir. Netflix came on board in 2019 after winning a competitive bidding war to finance the film, making a US$45 million deal for the film.

Hillbilly Elegy will be in select theatres and on Netflix November 24, 2020.
