Alicia Vikander is Your New Lara Croft

If there was ever a videogame movie that threatened to break away from the tradition of downright terribleness, it was the original Tomb Raider released in 2001. With the big name of Angelina Jolie in the short shorts of Lara Croft, it had a warm reception with critics and the moviegoing public.

A poor sequel, The Cradle of Life, and a disinterest in the game series later, it looked like the movie franchise was dead in the water. Following a successful reboot with 2013’s Tomb Raider, interest in a continuation of the film series was revitalised, leading to rumours of Daisy Ridley taking up the Croft mantle.

Recent news has revealed that the role has gone to a probably even better choice, the seriously talented Alicia Vikander of Ex Machina and The Danish Girl fame. Vikander won an Oscar for her performance in the latter and a Golden Globe nomination for the former, so here’s hoping she can bring some of that intensity and emotion to a modern Lara.

I can already picture forums across the web filling up with fume over the fact that her breasts aren’t polygonal enough.

The Tomb Raider reboot will release sometime next year. Roar Uthaug (The Wave, Escape) will be in the director’s chair.
