Agony Could Be 2017’s Most Unsettling Horror Game

Agony trailer

I haven’t been to church since I was about five years old, but the trailer for Agony makes me think I should change that pretty soon. This isn’t hyperbole, I had chills watching this, and not the good kind. It might be a combination of the chilling soundtrack and disturbing visuals, but I have a feeling Agony is going to be a game I can’t shake out of my head for the rest of the day.

Please don’t watch this at work. People will think things.

The game’s official synopsis:

You will begin your journey as tormented soul within the depths of hell, without any memories about your past.

The special ability to control people on your path, and even possess simple minded demons, gives you the necessary measures to survive in the extreme conditions you are in.

By exploring the hostile environment and interacting with other weary souls of the hellscape, the hero will soon understand that there is only one way to escape from Hell, and it will require meeting the mystical Red Goddess.

There’s such a cavalcade of the strange and beautiful in the trailer that it’s kind of hard to tell what’s going on, but that could be the point. A game centred around a journey through hell shouldn’t be a linear and obvious tale, it should twist, confuse, and leave you asking questions.

Even though it isn’t out until roughly the halfway point of 2017, we have a look at Agony’s gameplay and yup, it’s nightmare fuel.

The Event Horizon flashbacks are hitting me hard.

Agony is out in Q2 2017 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
