If, like pretty much everyone else, you’re sick to death of the mainline WWE 2K games, AEW have the news that’s perfect for you. Last night, the wrestling promotion announced that they’ve partnering with legendary Japanese developers Yuke’s to develop a new wrestling game for current and next-gen consoles. Check out the debut trailer at the top of the page.

What Details Do We Know About The AEW Game?

Not much yet, as the footage shown was from a work in progress, but it showcased Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho and Hikaru Shida doing battle for about a minute. AEW hosted a presentation last night in support of the announcement, where they also revealed that the game will try to emulate the feeling of one of the best wrestling games ever made, WWF No Mercy.

Yuke’s themselves have a long history of wrestling game development, as they were the ones behind the WWE games for around two decades, before 2K put the series in the hands of internal studio Visual Concepts during 2K20’s development, leading to a muddled and broken mess of a video game.

In order to ensure that the AEW game has that retro feeling, Yuke’s have brought on No Mercy’s director Hideyuki Iwashita to oversee the game’s development. No Mercy utilised the AKI Engine, which was also utilised in games like Def Jam: Vendetta and Fight For New York. Basically, AKI is the best, and if the AEW game is anywhere near as good as those games, we’re on to a winner.

Anything Else About AEW Games We Should Know?

Cody Rhodes outlined the plans for AEW video games on Twitter, with two other mobile games in the works. The first is a general manager mode that’s been highly requested amongst wrestling game fans for the longest time now, while the other is a casino game, which does tie into the theme of their annual event, Double Or Nothing. All in all, the future looks bright for AEW.
