And Brad Pitt is nowhere to be seen.

Following on from yesterday’s announcement, the first official trailer for A Total War Saga: Troy has been released by publisher Sega on the official Total War YouTube channel, and it’s about as epic as you could imagine.

While it’s a cinematic trailer with no actual gameplay footage, we have enough faith in developer Creative Assembly at this point that we’re really not bothered by the lack of gameplay. Because the main entries in the Total War franchise have been consistently brilliant, so we honestly don’t think we have anything to worry about.

As its name suggests, A Total War Saga: Troy will take place in ancient Greece, with a focus on the Trojan War. This is notably the furthest back in history the Total War franchise has ever gone, with some historians even doubting whether the Trojan War even took place due to an apparent lack of historical evidence. Either way, thanks to the description on the Steam page, we know that the game’s plot will specifically centre around Paris, the Prince of Troy, sailing away with Helen of Sparta, which upsets Helen’s father, King Menelaus, so much that he decides to start a war over it. A war which you’ll be controlling through large-scale strategy battles, just as we’ve come to expect from the previous Total War games.

Interestingly, a deleted Tweet from a PC Gamer writer showed an image of the cover of the next issue of the magazine, which said that A Total War Saga: Troy will take place in a ‘world of Gods and Monsters’. This seems to imply that the game will feature supernatural elements, similar to Total War: Warhammer, but it remains to be seen if this is the case. It’s also commonplace for the Total War games to be released with T certificates from the ESRB and to receive Blood and Gore DLC post-launch, but again, we’ll just have to wait and see if this happens with A Total War Saga: Troy.

Total War is one of the only AAA franchises not to be released on consoles, which is unfortunate, especially since games like XCOM 2 and Age of Wonders: Planetfall have proven that there is a market for strategy games on consoles. But even if it does end up being PC-only, we can still expect A Total War Saga: Troy to earn great reviews when it arrives next year.
