The first ever NXT UK Heritage Cup tournament has drawn to a close, with the finals last week featuring two very game superstars in Trent Seven and A-Kid. What a match it was, full of technical flair and everything that makes the British style of wrestling the most exciting art form of all.

To the surprise of many, it was the young Spaniard that came out on top of the veteran Seven. Where this may have been a little crushing for one of the founding fathers of the brand, it’s absolutely massive for A-Kid, who only recently started making waves in NXT UK prior to the show shutting shop for lockdown. But what does this mean for the rising star? Will he breakout into a major role for NXT’s burgeoning sister show?

With WALTER breaking the 600 day mark in his NXT UK Championship reign, he’s in need of a fresh opponent to help re-establish the title as one of the most prestigious of all time. ‘The Ring General’s most recent affair with Ilja Dragunov received worldwide critical acclaim, something of a masterpiece between the two European stars. A-Kid vs WALTER could very well be the next in line of instant classics on NXT UK.

This begs the question, should A-Kid be the one to dethrone WALTER? At the moment, I’d have to say no. Not that I don’t see a bright future ahead for the UK Heritage Cup winner, but more so that WALTER is firing on all cylinders as NXT UK Champion, and bringing a lot of new eyes to the product every time he steps in the ring.

Much like both Tyler Bate and Ilja Dragunov, A-Kid has that underdog presence that will help make him a surefire babyface star, especially after showing everyone his diverse range of technical abilities when he does tangle with the artist formerly known as Big Daddy Walter. Let us not forget that A-Kid has previously found fame with 5* performances against the likes of Zack Sabre Jr. in his home promotion Team White Wolf Wrestling, there’s no doubt he has the potential to achieve huge things in his near future, but just not yet.

A-Kid is the perfect candidate for a future mid-card championship in NXT UK. With NXT having the North American title, it helps establish the lesser known stars as credible contenders for the headlining spots once the current crop have moved on. Superstars like A-Kid, Flash Morgan Webster, Eddie Dennis and Dave Mastiff are all stars that are waiting to ascend to the next rank, a singles championship would certainly help them along the way.

Either way, A-Kid is a name to keep your eyes on as he continues to pursue mainstream fame after his big win on Wednesday night. Needless to say, NXT UK is ready to be shaken up as the likes of him, Rampage Brown and Pretty Deadly begin to take over.
