After using this band for the new Twisted Showcase trailer, I wanted to find out more, and spread the word so more people can share in hearing this great new band, Secateurs.
So lets start off with the basics, Who is in the band?
Jay Ratcliffe – Guitar, lead vocals, James Bond impersonations.
Mark Taylor – Bass, vocals, pouting.
Gareth “Bigtime” Jones – Drums, vocals, inflated ego.
How long have you been together?
Since the dawning of the age of Aquarius (2011).
What has been the highlight of being in Secateurs?
Being mistaken for seminal Brazilian death metal band “Sepultura”.
Who are your main influences?
Jay’s dad, a proper mod who does a great take on “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Our rehearsal room, which inexplicably smells of cannabis. And people forgetting how to drive on the M40, making our lives sad and miserable when we’re trying to get to Worthing on time to play a gig.
What was the first song you worked on that you thought this is what Secateurs is all about?
We were fairly content with our earliest material, but the first song where we really started singing from the same hymn sheet was probably “Breaking The Streak”.
As you know I’m a huge fan, the first time I saw you live was blown away, what do you think makes you such a great live band?
Thank you for being a huge fan. We have a weekly routine of rehearsing, and we stick to it. If we didn’t do that, we’d be terrible. And we’re not afraid to have a good time when playing live. Some bands are more concerned with trying to look cool, that part comes naturally to us.
You have an impressive roster of songs, what made you go for She lost her mind and howl at the moon as singles?
At the time we wanted to record a four or five track EP, but we only had the money to record two tracks. So we thought it was best to go for the the two that we personally felt were the “most catchy”.
What’s next for Secateurs? Any more singles coming? An album?
It’ll be a little rushed, but we’re planning to release a CD single for a song called “TEMP” on 11th September, and we’ll be holding a launch party that night at Telford’s Warehouse in Chester. The track will feature on our debut EP, which should hopefully be available early next year.
Last time I saw you live you had a new song, think it was called The Night of the Black Mamba, what inspired this one?
It’s called “Agatha Black Mamba”, but you were close enough! It’s simply inspired by David Attenborough.
If you want to find out more about Secateurs, buy your singles etc? Where can you go online?
