Twitch Becomes Yet Another Service Banned In China

Twitch

Bad news for any overseas gamers hoping to catch the latest Ninja stream: Twitch is officially banned in China.

The famous streaming service was ousted by the Chinese government earlier this week. It started with the website getting blocked, then the official Twitch app was removed from certain app stores, until eventually the service was shut down all throughout China for no specific reason.

This isn’t the first time a digital service has been blacklisted by the Chinese government. YouTube, Twitter, and Google have all been put on the country’s banlist. Ironically, it was the popularity of those apps that put them on the radar in the first place, and it looks like that’s what happened to Twitch as well.

The gamer’s alternative to YouTube was rapidly rising on the charts overseas, with the iOS app making it to the number 3 spot on iTunes.

It is a shame that Twitch got banned, especially with the Asian Games coming up. Without Twitch, there really aren’t many ways for gamers in China to watch the eSports event. Here’s hoping China eases up on their ban and allows Twitch and similar services to exist in their country.
