Sunrise’s popular anime series Gundam will be receiving the live-action adaptation treatment, as revealed at this year’s Anime Expo. Legendary Entertainment will co-produce the movie, overseen by Cale Boyter specifically alongside the Sunrise creative team.

Gundam first aired on April 7th 1979 as Mobile Suit Gundam, depicting a futuristic setting in which overpopulation on earth has caused conflict amongst humanity. The pilots use gigantic robot ‘mobile suits’ to wage war. The series has spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs, games, books and adaptations, all of which have turned the franchise into a multi-million property through merchandising.

The series is a Japanese cultural icon recognisable in a variety of media and is often considered the forerunner of the mecha genre. Gundam’s most recent noticeable reference took place in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, in which the iconic mobile suit is used to fight.

Legendary are responsible for numerous ambitious projects, including Skyscraper, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong and, perhaps most interestingly, Detective Pikachu, the first live-action Pokemon movie currently in the post-production stage.

Could this movie be yet another disappointing anime adaptation? Drop us a comment on your thoughts below.
