Fortnite Down: Playground LTM Disabled, Matchmaking Not Working

Fortnite Playground

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and Fortnite struggling to keep up with its own updates. We’ve seen Epic push new stuff out often without being able to properly troubleshoot any potential problems, and it looks like the v4.5 is following that same tradition.

The new update, which includes things like dual pistols and further shotgun nerfs, was rolled out at 8am GMT with a couple of hours of downtime. The game was briefly playable, but has been unable to supposedly keep up with demand. Epic acknowledge that they were having matchmaking issues and have already disabled Playground to begin to fix things.

I have been trying to join a match to test out the updates but have so far been unsuccessful. Barely anyone seems to be able to join right now, seemingly because Epic sneakily also disabled matchmaking. I wouldn’t waste your time trying to join a game until Epic post an official update on their social accounts; this could be a while.

Fortnite has a long history of outages, most notoriously when it went down for an entire day. Epic had previously mentioned that Playground was an intensive LTM for them as the game is not properly scaled to deal with so many people in so many different “matches”; there are only a few spots open for Playground players, so this is stressing their servers as they have to create more matches than usual so that everyone can try it out.
