The Death of Stalin takes a slapstick, satirical twist on the death of the most notorious Russian dictator. Due to the extremes that this comedy takes, this film has been banned from being screened in Russia, and police have taken action to crack down on audiences. Similar to The Dictator, Borat, or The Interview, this film pokes fun at ruthless men in power.

 

5. Unsane

Unsane tells the chilling tale of a young woman’s nightmare coming to life as her relentless stalker’s pursuing leads her to a mental institution, though she insists that she has no part being there and is sound in mind. Despite her pleas, she is treated as a patient, as seen in the trailer, forced to comply with as another inpatient. This horror quickly spirals out of control as events more intense and the plot thickens. Uniquely, this film was shot one-hundred percent on the Apple iPhone.

 

6. I Kill Giants

I Kill Giants is the adaptation of the graphic novel released in 2008. This fantasy-based film follows the struggles of teenage oddball Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe) and her escape from everyday life by falling into her own world. Her coping mechanisms contain her brawls with astounding beasts and giants alike, which could simply resemble the “giants” that she battles in the “real world.” This grim fantasy film distorts the grey lining between reality and Barbara’s own imagination.
